Somebody's Gotta Go. 23. 'Round Midnight. 24. Blue Garden Blues. Notable sides included are two of what many musical historians believe to be his very best efforts, West End Blues (Which he co-wrote with King Oliver) and Blues In My Condition, and one from 1942, the opus Fly Right (Epistrophy) that was so far ahead of its time that it had Jazz musicians discussing its pros and cons for years to come. From track 10 on they are all 1944 recordings, including his first nationally-charted single under his own billing, Tess' Torch Song which, with the inimitable Pearl Bailey singing, reached 19 Pop in April/May 1944 on Hit 7075 b/w Now I Know.

Charles Melvin "Cootie" Williams (July 10, 1911 – September 15, 1985) was an American jazz, jump blues, and rhythm and blues trumpeter. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Williams began his professional career at the age of fourteen with the Young Family band, which included saxophonist Lester Young. According to Williams he acquired his nickname as a boy when his father took him to a band concert. When it was over his father asked him what he'd heard and he replied, "Cootie, cootie, cootie. This rare recording of "Blue Garden Blues," a gloriously modern big-band treatment of the old "Royal Garden Blues," is an astonishing, startling, mind-blowing treat, one of the greatest accomplishments in all of recorded jazz.
