The baritone saxophone or "bari sax" is one of the larger members of the saxophone family, only being smaller than the bass, contrabass and subcontrabass saxophones. It is larger than the tenor, alto and soprano saxophones, which are the other commonly found members of the family.

This is a split album dedicated to the lost innovators of the baritone saxophone. Leo Parker did release a small handful of albums on Blue Note, although Melvin "Sax" Gill is more obscure (perhaps more known for his session work, if that). They both play a style of jazz that is post-big band, pre-bebop, the jump in the juke joint that was a precursor to R&B and rock'n'roll. Leo Parker played in Jacquet's group in 1947 and picked up some of Jacquet's stylistic devices, like riding on one note for quite a while and suddenly descending to the bottom regions of the horn. These traits are used by both baritone saxophonists on this disk. Leo Parker's tracks are the more succesful ones; Leo is the superior improviser and his musical ideas are quite logical even when using the lowest notes of his horn. His group sounds quite tight in their execution of the tunes, and an unnamed tenor saxophonist and anonymous pianist also get short solos.
