Stefan Zweig (/zwaɪɡ, swaɪɡ/; German: ; 28 November 1881 – 22 February 1942) was an Austrian (self-identified as cosmopolitan) novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer. At the height of his literary career, in the 1920s and 1930s, he was one of the most popular writers in the world. Zweig was born in Vienna, the son of Moritz Zweig (1845–1926), a wealthy Jewish textile manufacturer, and Ida Brettauer (1854–1938), a daughter of a Jewish banking family.

Stefan Jerzy Zweig (born January 28, 1941) is an author and cameraman. He survived the Buchenwald concentration camp at age four under protection from his father and other prisoners. Stefan Jerzy Zweig was born in Kraków. He lived with his parents, Helena and Dr. Zacharias Zweig and his sister, Sylwia Zweig in the Kraków ghetto. The family was split up in August 1944. His mother and sister were murdered in Auschwitz.

Stefan Zweig was a prolific Austrian novelist, dramatist, poet, essayist and translator. He was born into a bourgeois secular Jewish family in 1881 in Habsburg Vienna. In his autobiographical text Die Welt von Gestern; The World of Yesterday (1942), he described the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the turn of the century as the golden age of security and much of his work is set in this context. Stefan Zweig’s literary oeuvre includes his early poems as well as novellas, literary biographies, dramas, essays, libretti, novels and autobiographical texts. In his novellas Stefan Zweig elaborates his protagonists’ inner emotionial life extensively (see for example Brennendes Geheimnis (1913) and Verwirrung der Gefühle (1927) ).
