That points to the principal strength of Menotti, who generally wrote his own texts; he had a direct dramatic sense that may have been influenced by his experience of Broadway musical theater. The Telephone stands on its own; although its little story of a wedding proposal interrupted by multiple phone calls is slight, it is perfectly calibrated to the music (not to mention more relevant than ever), and it unrolls without missing a beat.

Mr. Menotti’s involvement with the musical theater was complete. He composed 25 operas, almost all in English. He wrote his own librettos and usually staged his own works. He also founded the Festival of Two Worlds, the long-running summer music festival that began in 1958 in Spoleto, Italy, and that he directed for some 40 years

It was written for production by the Ballet Society and was first presented on a double bill with Menotti's The Medium at the Heckscher Theater, New York City, February 18-20, 1947. The Broadway production took place on May 1, 1947, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The Metropolitan Opera presented it once, on July 31, 1965.
