The Trio is a 1961 live album by the Oscar Peterson Trio, recorded at the London House jazz club in Chicago. Three other albums were recorded by Peterson and his trio at the London House, Something Warm, The Sound of the Trio, and Put On a Happy Face. The complete music recorded by the trio at these sessions was released in 1997. I've Never Been in Love Before" (Frank Loesser) – 5:35. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" (Bob Hilliard, David Mann) – 8:07. Chicago" (Fred Fisher) – 8:55.
Girl Talk (also released as Oscar Peterson Plays for Lovers) is a 1968 studio album by jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, the second volume of his Exclusively for My Friends series. It was compiled from live studio sessions recorded between 1964 and 1966.
Ray Brown's time and placement of notes is, as usual, impeccable, and the very talented drummer in his group at the time, Karriem Riggins, provides a swinging kick for the quartet. In the spirit of democracy, each star gets a solo number - Peterson plays his ballad "When Summer Comes," Jackson pours out a doleful "Nature Boy," and Brown's ess medley eventually attracts the funky brushes of Riggins. But it's always better to hear them together.
This first matchup on records between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson was so logical that it is surprising it did not occur five years earlier. Originally recorded for Verve and three decades later reissued on this audiophile CD by Mobile Fidelity, the quartet set (which also includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) swings as hard as one might expect. Highlights include "On Green Dolphin Street," "The Work Song," "John Brown's Body" (a jam on "Battle Hymn of the Republic") and "Reunion Blues.
Named the "Very Tall Band" after their 1961 Verve recording, bassist Ray Brown, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, and pianist Oscar Peterson present some no-nonsense, straightahead jazz before an appreciative audience at New York's famed Blue Note club. With Peterson's devilish Art Tatum-derived piano solos, Jackson's sanctified swing, and Brown's deep tones and astonishing dexterity, this awesome trio, with young lion Karriem Riggins holding down the drum chair in "bomb-dropping," Kenny Clarke fashion, conduct a six-decade-old musical conversation. The Very Tall band is a reference to the album they recorded in 1962 as "Very Tall The Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson", which incidentally is a fabulous album. So does this live up to the very high standards they set 36 years ago.
