VU is an outtakes compilation album by the Velvet Underground. It was released in February 1985 by Verve Records. When the Velvet Underground moved from Verve Records (who had released their first two albums) to parent company MGM Records, they signed a two-album deal, releasing their third and eponymous album The Velvet Underground in March 1969. Later that same year there was a management change and MGM Records' new CEO, Mike Curb, was brought in to try to rescue the financially struggling label

The Velvet Underground (album). The Velvet Underground is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band the Velvet Underground. Released in March 1969, it was their first record with Doug Yule, who was a replacement for John Cale. Recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California, the album's sound-consisting largely of ballads and straightforward rock songs-marked a notable shift in style from the band's previous recordings.

It is comprised mostly of previously unreleased material from abortive 1969 sessions, with additional unreleased material from a 1968 session with John Cale. Additional material from both of these sessions would appear on Another View, and another version of the "lost fourth album" was released much later as 1969

While many of the tunes on VU had circulated for years on bootlegs (sourced from rough-mix acetates reportedly belonging to Sterling Morrison), the album gave them their first authorized release, and in much improved fidelity. Some fans have grumbled (and not without reason) over the very '80s polish the new mixes gave the tunes, but this still sounds like the Velvet Underground, and in fine fettle at that.

VU isn’t the quite that eleventh commandment but a close facsimile. VU is just a fragment of a larger work, albeit an essential fragment. The tracks that comprise VU represent studio sessions between the recording of The Velvet Underground and Loaded.
