The Ol’ Situation: Mötley Crüe wrote the majority of 1997’s Generation Swine without Vince Neil in mind, which is ironic since the record may be best known as Neil’s return to the band. From the onset, Crüe’s then-label Elektra insinuated - and later outright insisted - that the band needed Neil, but Sixx and Lee preferred writing with John Corabi, whose voice and disposition allowed the band to explore new sonic dimensions. While superior to any album they did afterward, Crüe’s self-titled disc was a valiant effort that missed the goalpost by inches. This wasn’t a band built for nuance, which left the Temple of the Dog-like Misunderstood and the psych-lite Loveshine flapping weakly in the wind. And trying to rub mud and distortion over the familiar fist pumping anthemics was not a good look.

Best album, best song. If you don't know better ask some body . I think that randy and motley did a great job on this song and it is under played and not ever givin a chance to be considered a good motley Crüe song. Not a Popular Song but Still a Classic.

On Mötley Crüe's first album recorded without vocalist Vince Neil, the band revamped its trademark dirty but melodic heavy metal, adding elements of '90s grunge and alternative metal. New vocalist John Corabi is a hoarse shouter without Neil's charisma, so he wasn't able to put a distinctive spin on the pedestrian grind the rest of the band churned out. Mötley Crüe seems to have equated grunge with seriousness on this eponymously title release, since very few of the songs on the record recall the hedonistic atmosphere of the band's '80s albums.

Their best non-jokey tracks are probably early Cheap Trick ringer "Whatchadoin'," catchier-than-Crüe cruiser "Rats Motel," metalbilly hoedown "King of the Nighttime Cowboy" and "Submission," which sounds like a heavier version of Boston fake-new-wavers the Fools. Best joke track is "Piranha," a sort of super-fast metal version of Descendents-type hardcore, "about a fish.
