Unknown Pleasures is the debut studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 15 June 1979 by Factory Records. The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport's Strawberry Studios in April 1979, and was produced by Martin Hannett, who incorporated a number of unconventional production techniques into the group's sound. The cover artwork was designed by artist Peter Saville, using a data plot of signals from a radio pulsar.

Songwriter Interviews. Within the realm of rock n' roll, there have certainly been flashier bass players than Peter Hook.

This memoir by the Joy Division bassist is steeped in guilt, writes Dorian Lynskey. Hook and Sumner are cast as comic relief, constantly overruled by belligerent producer Martin Hannett ("a lunatic wizard") and forbidden from speaking in interviews by manager Rob Gretton. He didn't do it to create a mystique around the band but because he thought we were a couple of cretins. Despite the stream of earthy anecdotes, which includes Coronation Street's Pat Phoenix, some frozen chickens and a "shit sandwich" (though not all at the same time), there's a terrible sadness at the heart of the book.

Closer (Joy Division album). Closer is the second and final studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 18 July 1980 by Factory Records. Produced by Martin Hannett, it was Joy Division's first posthumous album and was released two months after the suicide of the band's lead singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. London: Simon & Schuster. ISBN 978-1-471-12980-3.

Vivid, funny, and unexpectedly touching, Peter Hook’s memoir strips away the shroud of myth surrounding Joy Division to offer a refreshingly gritty perspective on the story of four ordinary young men who together made extraordinary music. Simon Reynolds, author of Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-84). The story is now legendary: in 1980, on the heels of their groundbreaking debut album and on the eve of their first . tour, the band was rent asunder by the tragic death of their enigmatic lead singer, Ian Curtis. Yet in the mere three years they were together, they produced two landmark albums and a handful of singles-including the iconic anthem "Love Will Tear Us Apart"-that continue to have a powerful resonance. Now, for the first time, their story is told by one of their own.

In Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division, Peter Hook, bassist for the legendary, groundbreaking band Joy Division, takes readers backstage with the group that helped define the sound of a generation and influenced artists such as U2, Radiohead, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Unlike other books about Joy Division, Factory Records, or lead singer Ian Curtis-who took his own life just before the band's first . Tour-Unknown Pleasures tells Joy Division's story from the unique perspective of one of the three surviving band members.

For the Joy Division book, I did nearly 50 hours of interviews and then we put it into a timeline and create a book so you literally are creating it from thin air. The process is exciting but the tough bit is waiting for it to come out, to see what people think as you are a little bit conscious of it because of the nature of the subject, especially with Joy Division and you don't want to shatter anyone's mystique. People have these impressions with Joy Division that they were incredibly arty and mysterious so I was very worried about that  .
