Band Name Gorgoroth (NOR). Album Name Under the Sign of Hell. Released date 20 October 1997. Labels Season Of Mist Regain Records Malicious Records. Oh, where do I begin with this album? Under the Sign of Hell is Gorgoroth’s third offering, and though it brings several incredible songs, it also brings forth a flawed album that seems to resolve its issues as the album progresses. This would be one of the last albums with Grim (Erik Brødreskift) before his suicide in 1999. Musically, this album was fantastic.

This album marks the introduction of Gaahl to Gorgoroth, and with it their days of notoriety. The album is split between the outgoing vocalist (Pest?) and the new and as a result has that hodge-podge transition sort of sound. I think this is the album (my opinion),that they started to become more produced and perhaps more melodic. Take that with a grain of salt, this isn't Cradle of Filth. After some dabbling was early as Pentagram & as late as Ad Majora, I'm starting my in depth Gorgoroth listening with 1997's Under The Sign Of Hell, largely due to the presence of Grim on drums. I love the first 3 Borknagar albums (first 5 really) & was interested to what little more of his imitable style was recorded. My biggest surprise was how catchy and melodic Gorgoroth can be amidst their harsh delivery.

Under the Sign of Hell. Album (Studio full-length).

Under the Sign of Hell was released in 1997, and Gorgoroth went on their first headlining European tour in fall 1997, with support by Mystic Circle. It was on this tour that Infernus and Tormentor were approached by the major German heavy metal record label Nuclear Blast, who wanted to sign the band Tenure with Nuclear Blast (1997–2003). Gorgoroth released Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam in June 2006 through Regain Records. This was only the second Gorgoroth album to be released since 2000's Incipit Satan – a noticeable reduction in productivity from a band that had previously released 2 demos, 5 full-length albums and 1 live EP between 1993 and 2000. For the recording of the new album, Frost again performed on the drums. This album helped the band to expand its fan base.

Gorgoroth pull the classical undertones of the Antichrist album and bring them to the forefront here. Though the majority of the tracks clock in at a mere 3 or 4 minutes, Gorgoroth still manage to sound quite epic and grand throughout. There are no keyboards to speak of here, but they are not needed. Album opener Revelation of Doom may scare some off given the overly obnoxious and hotly mixed snare drum, but it is thankfully only severely loud on this track. If one can look beyond that, this is a rather enjoyable song as well. With that in mind, Under the Sign of Hell is prime black metal magic with the succinctness of an early Slayer or Bathory album. It stands as the point in this band's career when all of the elements fell into place, and they arrived at a point of brilliance (or is that darkness") that would remain the example of what all of their other albums hoped to be.

Finally, the finishing touch that gives Under The Sign Of Hell it's ice-cold and hellish atmosphere are Thomas "Pest" Kronenes' spine-chilling vocals, proving once again why he is one of the best Black Metal vocalists out there, although his work can really only be appreciated within the confines of a Gorgoroth album in conjunction with Infernus's amazing songwriting abilities  . You'll be pleased to know that the excellent brand of Black Metal presented on Gorgoroth's Under The Sign Of Hell isn't confined to this album alone. In fact, almost all of Gorgoroth's work follows the same formula.
