Der Weg einer Freiheit ("The Way of a Freedom") is a German extreme metal band from Würzburg, formed in 2009 by Tobias Jaschinsky as vocalist and Nikita Kamprad as guitarist and principal songwriter. After the release of two studio albums – Der Weg einer Freiheit (2009) and Unstille (2012) – Jaschinsky left the band in 2012 and Kamprad took over vocals. He now performs alongside guitarist Nico Rausch, bassist Nico Ziska and drummer Tobias Schuler.

Finisterre, on the other hand, offers no easy answers. It by no means pigeonholes itself into a post-black aesthetic, but the album owes noticeably more to post-black metal than the band’s older material. The atmosphere that the resulting spacey tremolo lines conjure is undoubtedly downbeat, but it’s also guarded, with a tangible sense of trepidation forcing honest feelings below surface level. While it doesn’t quite reach the same cathartic peaks as Der Weg einer Freiheit’s last two albums, Finisterre stands with Boris’ Dear as one of the most emotionally resonant metal records of the year, and it’s a fantastic display of musicianship to boot. After almost ten full listens I feel like I’ve only just begun to fully appreciate its intricacies, a sure sign that DWeF will continue to grow as an emotionally and compositionally complex example of modern black metal in years to come.

But while the drums are often the star of Finisterre, the key to the album’s success is how Der Weg Einer Freiheit works as a cohesive unit. Even when they’re at full power, Schuler’s drumming and Kamprad’s vocals leave plenty of room for the interplay of guitars to set a devastating yet gorgeous emotional tone. The band is more than willing to pull back at times, catching their breath by engaging in more deliberate or subdued moments

Finisterre' flows together into a coherent picture that stresses the Germans’ unique approach and sound. This album marks the point where DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT turn their various influences into a work entirely of their own expression despite never trying to cover up their roots.
