Nidingr will release their fourth album in 2017, titled The High Heat Licks Against Heaven, an album drenched in Norse mythology, and names from the younger and older Edda appears throughout in the lyrics. The album drifts in the middle of black and death metal, but with the Norse theme it creates a unique and fresh breath of sound. To put it mildly, this is a brutal and honest metal record. The album was being worked on intensely for two years, where they took a deep dive into the old English translations of the older and younger Edda from the 18th century.

Armed with a new bassist, Nidingr is back with their fourth album, The High Heat Licks Against Heaven. I wanted icy-cold black metal with unrelenting savagery, and for the most part, High Heat satisfies. Right off the bat, Hangagud blasts forth, showing that Nidingr haven’t remained complacent in their absence. yvind Myrvoll mixes up his drumming in the song’s second half but mostly retains a mid-tempo blast throughout. Teloch’s icy tremolo riffs and upwards chord strums still send chills.

As usual Nidingr experiments with new elements on this album too. The goal was to simplify things without losing quality and still keep the elements that Nidingr is known for, which is a challenge by itself. The High Heat Licks Against Heaven is more raw and ‘in your face’, emphasizing the blistering speed and heaviness, which makes it even more extreme. The 7 string guitar is still a big part of the Nidingr sound, as it has been since the first full album in 2005. As always this is the best Nidingr album to date
