Surfer Girl is the third album by American rock band the Beach Boys and their second in 1963. Surfer Girl reached number 7 in the US during a chart stay of 56 weeks. In 2017, Surfer Girl was ranked the 193rd greatest album of the 1960s by Pitchfork.

Surfer Girl does have some great tunes, including the title song, the hot rod ditty "Little Deuce Coupe," and "Catch a Wave" (which could have been a substantial hit single on its own merits). Most significant of all is the gorgeous ballad "In My Room," which anticipated future Beach Boys releases both in its sophisticated production (strings, organ, dense harmonies) and its personal, solipsistic lyrics

Surfer Girl demonstrates that the Beach Boys are equal to the task of producing two albums a year (the ante is dramatically raised in their next album-made the following month!), with demonstrable growth in the quality of their music making and performances. This is their first great album.

Written by group leader Brian Wilson, "Surfer Girl" was part of a run of surf-related hits for The Beach Boys, following in the wake of "Surfin' Safari" and "Surfin' . " Unlike those tracks, "Surfer Girl" is a love song, with the singer professing his devotion and imagining a life of oceanside joy together. This is the version that was released on July 22 and used as the title track to the third Beach Boys album. This was the first song Brian Wilson wrote. In a 1976 radio interview, he said he was 19 when the melody popped into his head as he was driving to a hot dog stand. When he got home, he quickly put the song together, an early sign of his musical genius. In terms of melody and lyrics, this song owes a debt to "When You Wish Upon A Star," the 1940 classic from the movie Pinocchio.

Surfer Girl' weaved into one album all that the Beach Boys had sung about prior to its release (Surfing, Cars, and Girls). As the album finished it's 56 week run on the charts, peaking at Brian felt that it was time for a change in tune. The next album, 'Little Deuce Coupe' would be a giant step into the Hot Rod genre, presumably influenced by Wilson's good friend, and long-time writing partner, Gary Usher.
