Terence "Jet" Harris MBE (6 July 1939 – 18 March 2011) was an English musician. He was the bass guitarist of The Shadows from 1958 until April 1962, and had subsequent success as a soloist and as a duo with the drummer Tony Meehan. Harris, the only child of Bill and Winifred Harris, was born Terence Harris at Willesden Maternity Hospital, Honeypot Lane, Kingsbury, North West London, England. His prowess as a sprinter at Dudden Hill secondary modern school earned him the nickname Jet.

As Jet Harris and Tony Meehan, they had big hits in 1963 with Diamonds – which reached No 1 – Scarlett O'Hara and Applejack. Among those Harris had inspired to take up the electric bass was the future Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones, who was briefly a member of the Harris-Meehan touring band. By this time, Harris was also making news offstage. Peter Stockton writes: I first met Jet Harris in the 1980s, when he played a brilliant set at Lennon's Rock'n'Roll Bar, Covent Garden, central London, which I owned with Cynthia Lennon. He and I next met in 2008 on the Isle of Wight, and he asked me to manage him. The resulting show, Hit Parade Heroes, also featuring two singers, John Leyton and Mike Berry, whose chart success had come in the 1960s, proved popular at theatres from the south coast to Scarborough.

Jet Harris, the original bass player with The Shadows, has died of cancer aged 71. The guitarist, who played on number one hits including Apache, died at his partner's home in Winchester, his agent Peter Stockton said. Sir Cliff Richard paid tribute to his former bandmate, saying: "Jet was exactly what The Shadows and I needed - a backbone holding our sound together. Born Terence Harris in London, the guitarist got his biggest break in 1958 when he was on tour with the Most Brothers. On the same bill as Cliff Richard and the Drifters, he later joined the group permanently and made his recording debut on Sir Cliff's third single Livin' Lovin' Doll. He was made an MBE for services to Music in the 2010 New Year's Honours list. He is survived by his partner, Janet Hemingway.
