Merzbow & HEXA - Achromatic Masami Akita once said of his own music that, "if music was sex, Merzbow would be pornography. It's a Merzbow album first and foremost, reveling in the sort of ear-splitting static that made Akita an international noise icon. But the presence of English and Stewart tempers his aggressive tendencies. By introducing elements of ambient and drone, the trio molds chaotic fractals into deliberate geometries.

Achromatic is a collabroative album by the Japanese noise musician Merzbow and HEXA, a duo of Lawrence English and Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu. HEXA and Merzbow mix and produce one another’s sides on Achromatic, with English and Stewart taking on production duties for the Merzhex suite and Merzbow returning the favor for the 18-minute Hexamer. Merzhex Part 1 opens the record with a blisteringly high-frequency squeal that’s thankfully replaced 30 seconds in with a thundering bass pulse. This is music you feel in your bones, and such transitions trigger an instinctively physical relief.

com The esoteric noise duo known as HEXA is the sonic union of Xiu Xiu’s focal point Jamie Stewart and sonic provocateur Lawrence English. While Merzbow has remained a solemn figure within the canon of noise, and he is no stranger to the members of HEXA. Jamie Stewart and Merzbow worked together as a duet on a collaborative Merzxiu LP in 2015. On the other side of the spectrum, Lawrence English has curated numerous concerts for Merzbow across his native Australia.
