Hantaï's reading is exuberant and youthful. His theme, straightforward and pleasant, gives little hint of the thrills to come, but soon the material involves itself in incredible brightness and precision that grips the listener for the duration. Supremely virtuosic but never flashy, Hantaï does not lean on the listener in emphasizing the profundity of the slow variations; instead, he picks apart their highly intricate relationships to the basic theme

Hantai's technique is superb, with wonderful articulation and a lovely sense of phrasing, and he's clearly thought through his interpretation. Each variation is well characterized, the canons are clear and lucid, and Hantai shapes the whole work as a series of structural arcs climaxing in the catharsis and release of the final variations and the theme's return. But as fine as Hantai's performance is, it never quite touches the infinite. The performance is brilliantly performed, but it does not plumb the intellectual, emotional, or spiritual depths of the music.

Bach: The Goldberg Variations is the 1955 debut album of Canadian classical pianist Glenn Gould. An interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988), the work launched Gould's career as a renowned international pianist, and became one of the most well-known piano recordings. Sales were "astonishing" for a classical album: it was reported to have sold 40,000 copies by 1960, and had sold more than 100,000 by the time of Gould's death in 1982.

Pierre Hantaï's version is particularly notable. If you're looking for a rendition using harpsichord (not piano), includes all of the repeats (many versions don't), and improvises on the repeat phrases (as correct performance practice dictates), Hantaï' rises to the very top of the field. I love the phrasing and technical facility of the Suzuki version, but with Hantaï, you feel as close to the composer as possible. This piano version not only has great sound but Mr. Hantai takes all of the repeats called for by Bach.
