The Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) is an English chamber orchestra, based in London. John Churchill, then Master of Music at the London church of St, and Neville Marriner (later Sir Neville) founded the orchestra as "The Academy of St. ", a small, conductorless string group. The ASMF gave its first concert on 13 November 1959, in the church after which it was named. In 1988, the orchestra dropped the hyphens from its full name.

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he did not introduce new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, an unrivalled control of harmonic and motivic organisation, and the adaptation of rhythms, forms and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France.

In the new catalogue you can look up the popular title in the index and get lucky. And the explanation of the title is then to be found in the entry for Op. 70. But that’s really only incidentally. Under the work number WoO 120, the 1955 catalogue lists the lied of an unknown poet, ‘Man strebt, die Flamme zu verhehlen’, which Beethoven, according to the inscription on the extant autograph, had composed for the actress and playwright Johanna Franul von Weißenthurn (1776–1847)  . Chorale Preludes (Johann Sebastian Bach) (1). Clarinet Concerto op. 26 (Spohr) (1).

Born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, died in 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A musician himself his father started Beethoven’s early musical education, nurturing the ambition of educating a child prodigy. When Ludwig van Beethoven was 12 years old his father had almost ruined the family because of his severe alcoholism. Ludwig had to work to support the family, first as an assistant to his teacher, court organist Christian Gottlob Neefe, then as an assistant organist earning a salary of 150 guilders. With his name standing in the same line as those of Bach, Mozart or Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven is unquestionably one of the most outstanding and radical composers on the music arena throughout history. As he used to say about himself, Beethoven can write music, thank God, but he can do nothing else on earth.

Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven were two of the greatest composers in classical Western music. They were both Germans. Beethoven, a contemporary of Mozart, was born 20 years after the death of Bach. Bach lived in the Baroque period while Beethonven was a crucial figure in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era. Beethoven was an admirer of Bach. He often played the preludes and fugues of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Beethoven called Bach the "Urvater der Harmonie" ("Original father of harmony") and, in a pun on the literal meaning of Bach's name, "nicht Bach, sondern Meer" ("not a brook, but a sea")
