Only Theatre of Pain is the debut studio album by American rock band Christian Death, released in March 24, 1982, through record label Frontier. Like all things California it takes itself way too seriously, referencing Living Theatre, Artaud and the almost obligatory Satanism, but this stuff rocks and still sounds punky and fresh after more than 30 years. And Ross is of course THE Christian Death singer of choice. Best Gothic album ever. And with First and Last and Always as competition that's saying something.

Only Theatre of Pain was the debut studio album of American goth rock band Christian Death, originally released by Frontier Records in 1982. The album is considered the harbinger of deathrock. All tracks after "Prayer" (on the later published CD version only) actually comprise the earlier EP, "Deathwish". The writing of Only Theatre of Pain was vocalist Rozz Williams' rebellion to his religious upbringing as well his own personal attacks against organized religion.

Album · 1981 · 16 Songs. You could call this 1982 debut album from Christian Death the birth of deathrock, or even Yankee goth. It’s a noir-flavored perversion of postpunk that finds singer Rozz Williams crooning his way through guttural appeasements atop driving rhythms, pitched noises, and droning and shuddering guitars. Meant-to-provoke notions of necrophilia, bondage, death, and incest abound, to the point of parody. But it’s basically rock ’n’ roll, the kind that rises from dark basement corners and can still scare parents.
