It was released on 4 March 1983 through Telegraph and Virgin Records. The title and cover art (designed by Peter Saville) allude to a painting by Vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth based on dazzle camouflage, titled Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool.

For the OMD album, see Dazzle Ships (album). SS West Mahomet in dazzle camouflage, 1918. Dazzle camouflage, also known as razzle dazzle (in the . or dazzle painting, was a family of ship camouflage used extensively in World War I, and to a lesser extent in World War II and afterwards. Unlike other forms of camouflage, the intention of dazzle is not.

McCluskey, Humphreys, and company couldn't take many listeners with them, though, and it's little surprise why - a couple of moments aside, Dazzle Ships is pop of the most fragmented kind, a concept album released in an era that had nothing to do with such conceits. On its own merits, though, it is dazzling indeed, a Kid A of its time that never received a comparative level of contemporary attention and appreciation

Even so, the group have launched Dazzle Ships into the Classic Album gig market with some caution. Tonight’s show was announced strictly as a one-off UK date and, while Dazzle Ships is prioritised in the promotion and merchandise, it’s been paired with the tried and tested idea of playing Architecture & Morality in full, in the second half of the evening. More so than any other OMD sleeve, it’s the amount of detail that’s gone into the design of Dazzle Ships that helped it retain cult status throughout its decades in the wilderness of poor sales and critical loathing.

OMD’s fourth album, Dazzle Ships, was perhaps a little too aptly named. Its title derived from the d warship camouflage intended to confuse enemy submarines during the 20th Century’s two World Wars, but its contents just as quickly confounded the public. While the album briefly peaked at N. in the UK Top 40, Dazzle Ships was panned by the press and deemed a commercial failure. Of course, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and it should also be remembered that when they approached Dazzle Ships, OMD’s Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys were buoyed with confidence as their much-acclaimed third album, 1981’s Architecture & Morality, had gone platinum on the back of sublime electro-pop hits such as ‘Joan Of Arc (Maid Of Orleans)’ and the lush

Referring to Dazzle Ships as OMD's Kid A is getting the right idea but ultimately sells the former album short. Given the context of its original release, Dazzle Ships is quite possibly the most unique, unexpected, and uncommercial album ever to make the UK Top Five. If it overreaches the standard paradigm of pop music by a mile, its grasp covers almost all that ground. It remains an imperfect but stunning and, crucially, enthralling experience. The fallout from Dazzle Ships' monumental commercial failure was considerable. I wish we had made Architecture & Morality number two", McCluskey said in 2002.
