Dazzle Ships is the fourth studio album by English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. It was released on March 4, 1983. The album’s title and cover reference the 1919 Vorticism painting Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool by Edward Wadsworth. The album showcased a more experimental sound for the band, drawing inspiration from musique concrète and electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk. The unconventional sound of Dazzle Ships was a major departure from their previous record Architecture and Morality (1981), which brought OMD to the peak of their popularity with three internationally successful singles that had a more radio-oriented traditional synthpop sound. At the time of its release, Dazzle Ships was mostly panned by critics. Many criticized its sound and called it difficult to understand.
