Debo Band brings these musical what-ifs to life on Ere Gobez (FPE Records; May 20, 2016), the bold, grooving follow-up to their acclaimed debut. The large ensemble is known for its fun, danceable dives into Ethiopia’s rich musical worlds-from Orthodox Christian liturgy to hot-and-sweaty club sounds. As Debo band leader and sax player Danny Mekonnen insists, Ethiopian musical cultures are so diverse that the band could only scratch the surface even after ten years of dedicated study. In Ethiopia, in the early 70s, you had a lot of different styles and artists and arrangers.

Debo Band’s saxophonist, leader and ethnomusicologist Danny Mekonnen translates the phrase Ere gobez as a call of the lionhearted-it's a term used to inspire. It’s certainly an apt label and message for the Ethiopian 11-piece band’s second album, a record the reaches and then surpasses the heights of their excellent 2012 self-titled debut. Because not only do the varying definitions of gobez fit the range of music on this record, but the music of Debo Band is that of a big, brave roar, song after song

Debo Band (also known simply as Debo) are a Boston-based Ethiopian music ensemble led by saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Ranging from 10–12 members playing horns, guitars, violins, percussion, and accordion, their sound incorporates Ethiojazz, folk, and pop styles from the Horn of Africa infused with tinges of motifs from Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as punk, experimental, and psychedelic rock.

Debo Band are a large ensemble led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Since their inception in 2006, the band has won raves for their groundbreaking take on Ethiopian pop music (think Ethiopiques), which incorporates traditional scales and vocal styles, alongside American soul and funk rhythms, and instrumentation reminiscent.

Debo Band: Ere Gobez Wary of bohemian musos gone ethnic and hostile to horn tuttis, I find this Boston-based pan-Ethiopian aggregation somewhat forced and obstreperous. And though you may have reservations about one track or another, not one is thrown away. ern European brass bands. Their highly anticipated sophomore album, Ere Gobez (FPE Records; May 20, 2016), continues the band’s innovative approach to the Ethiopian musical past, keeping the spirit of the original without being beholden to it-but gets even wilder in its grooves and imagination.
