New Johnny Cash album 'Johnny Cash Forever Words: The Music' will put legendary musician's poetry to music by Chris Cornell, Jamey Johnson and more. The album will be titled Johnny Cash Forever Words: The Music, and was instigated by John Carter Cash, Cash’s son. The project first came to light when Johnson mentioned it in an interview with Kentucky Country Music. John Carter has a good number of poems that Johnny wrote. I say poems because they don’t have music to them. Johnson along with Cash’s son have both worked on them. Part of it was just really cool to get this lyric in that we didn’t have a second verse to. Johnson told Kentucky Country Music. So, John Carter and I sat down and wrote a second verse. The way we did it was by creating something akin to a painter’s palette.

This was Cash's final album devoted to previously unreleased performances of faith-based music and hymns, following a long string of such releases dating back to 1959 and individual singles and album tracks even before that, though many of the songs featured had previously been recorded by Cash. Tracks 6, 9 and 10 were previously recorded for Hymns from the Heart (1962); tracks 5, 11, 14 and 15 were previously recorded for Sings Precious Memories (1975); and track 7 was recorded in concert for The Survivors Live (1982).
