Madchester was a music and cultural scene that developed in the Manchester area of North West England in the late 1980s, in which artists merged alternative rock with acid house and dance culture as well as other sources, including psychedelia and 1960s pop. The label was popularised by the British music press in the early 1990s, and its most famous groups include the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, the Charlatans and 808 State.

Madchester - So Much To Answer For. An introduction to the scene with snapshots of some of its personalities. I picked up The Stone Roses’ ‘Elephant Stone’ because it was produced by Peter Hook and then bought their debut album during the first week of release.
Madchester, So Much to Answer For. Half a world away in Columbia MO, I used to listen to KCOU, which would play lots of Acid House and Belgian New Beat. It was the first contemporary music that I was into as it was happening. Their second album, 1988's Bummed was probably the first instance of a band and its producer (Martin Hannet) taking loads of E and then trying to capture that sound on record whilst on said drug. It's kind of an E-quivalent to the Acid Rock of the 1960s. Fittingly, the sounds buzz, chirp and echo in both a way that's simultaneously cavernous and claustrophobic.
Madchester the album does exactly what it says on the can,it provides you with a smattering of the great good form the period. You got the Happy Mondays, The Charlatans and the Stone Roses, and yes you also have The paris Angels superb song Perfume, taken form there much underrated debut Sundew. Full marks on that front. The annoying Soup Dragons and the splendid Mock Turtles (Steve Cogans Brother apparently) but where is "Weekender" by Flowered up, "Box set go" by the High" "Standing here" by the Mill Town Brothers.
There is a line in Suffer Little Children, the closing track of the 1984 debut album by The Smiths, which even now continues to cloud the Manchester music scene from which it sprung. The song, written by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, is a disturbing piece about Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, the Moors Murderers who abducted, sexually assaulted and killed five young children in the Manchester area in the mid-1960s, before burying their bodies in the unforgiving hills that gather around the English city. Its tenth line, Oh Manchester, so much to answer for, substantiates that claim.
much of a good time to notice that everyone else was staring. It was a Mondays release, 1989's Madchester Rave On EP, that gave the scene a label, a hook for the world's media. As usual, Factory records' mouth-on-wheels Tony Wilson did his fantastic propaganda thing, going over to a US music conference to inform America that it was behind the times, that Manchester was where it was at, that it had swiped America's best music from right under its nose, sold it back to them and it hadn't even noticed.
