The Háry János Suite is probably the best known work and it would be difficult to choose a better combination of performance and spaceous recording/transfer. The conductor controls the orchestra and its soloists perfectly. The Galánta Dances are interpreted in a thrilling manner. The Peacock Variations, based on a song promising freedom from oppression, receive a performance better than any other that I have heard. I was not familiar with the Marosszék Dances, originally composed for piano, and whilst they do not stand out they complete a CD of the highest possible standard.

This disc is part of a delightful series of Hungarian releases revisiting some unusual Kodály works under the baton of veteran conductor Adam Fischer. Here he leads the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose brass section executes Kodály's comic lines without a hint of stress. There is one familiar repertory item here: the Háry János-Suite, a colorful, at times laugh-out-loud funny (if you dare) set of episodes from a picaresque comic opera.
