Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a group of progressive, invariably fatal, conditions that are associated with prions and affect the brain (encephalopathies) and nervous system of many animals, including humans, cattle, and sheep.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, caused by a prion, that mainly affects cattle. Other ruminants, cats, nonhuman primates and humans are occasionally affected; this disease is called feline spongiform encephalopathy (FSE) in cats, and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in people. Various neurological signs have been reported in experimentally infected sheep. In one study, Cheviot sheep mainly developed ataxia with minimal pruritus, and died in a few days to a week. In indigenous French breeds, clinical signs included ataxia and intense pruritus with loss of fleece. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent in spleen from an ARR/ARR orally exposed sheep.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy is caused by an infectious agent that has a long incubation period, between two and five years. Signs of the disease include behavioral changes, such as agitation and nervousness, and a progressive loss of muscular coordination and locomotive function. In advanced stages the animal frequently loses weight, shows fine muscular contractions over its neck and body, walks in an abnormal and exaggerated manner, and may isolate itself from the herd. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a prion disease that is invariably fatal in affected cattle and has been implicated as a significant human health risk. From: Reference Module in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Psychology, 2017.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy is also commonly known as mad cow disease which causes spongy neurodegeneration in the brain and spinal cord of adult cattle. Diagnosis of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. It is very difficult to diagnose the disease at an early stage due to its very long incubation period of months to years. So, presumptive diagnosis can only be made by the developing signs and symptoms.

Mad Cow Disease was first found in cattle in England in 1986 causing hundreds of thousands of cattle to die. Between 1985-95, almost 1 million cattle were infected in the UK and about ¾ of those were fed to humans (Campbell 2006).

bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, chronic. wasting disease (CWD) in cervids, transmissible mink enceph-. alopathy in minks, feline spongiform encephalopathy in cats, and exotic ungulate encephalopathy in zoo animals such as the. kudu, nyala, gemsbok, eland, and oryx. The prion agent of each. disease is named after the disease itself (. is used as animal feed in various proportions throughout. most of the developed world. However, only a few European. countries described cases of BSE originating from within. Epidemiological analysis revealed many years.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as "mad cow disease," is a fatal disease that strikes the nervous system of cattle. BSE is part of a group of diseases called prion diseases that occur in both animals and humans. In humans, there are three different prion diseases: Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD), also named sporadic CJD (sCJD), -Scheinker disease, and fatal familial insomnia
