Photo: Justin Tsucalas. Making an album is tough. Just ask Guns N’ Roses, or The Avalanches, or The Avalanches again in 31 years when their third album comes out. Overthink things too much, and you could start sliding down a slippery slope, second-guessing every decision until suddenly it’s years later, and all you’ve got is a half-baked album and health problems from eating too much Half Baked.
The album, made up of seven compositions for alto sax, will arrive via Hausu Mountain on September 28. An Exploded View of Time was recorded over the course of a single day as a series of gruelling live performances, and is presented with minimal post-production.
We are proud as papa to release Andrew Bernstein’s first vinyl record, An Exploded View of Time. This album is truly a gem and we’re proud as ever to have the opportunity to work on this one. While most HausMo albums trend towards multi-tracked, thick mixes, Bernie provides an excellent counterpoint as one man with a saxophone performing live.
It shows the components of an object slightly separated by distance, or suspended in surrounding space in the case of a three-dimensional exploded diagram.
It captures the vibe of their debut album perfectly - a sense of everything having been pulled apart, its guts on display, but somehow holding it together despite the damage done.
Exploded View is a new band-their inaugural live dates having taken place just this past spring-whose personnel happens to comprise a team of ringers. The band is fronted by British-born, Berlin-based singer Anika, whose career includes collaborations with Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and a background in political journalism.
