A Woman a Man Walked By is the second collaborative studio album English alternative rock musicians PJ Harvey and John Parish, released on 27 March 2009 by Island Records. It is the second collaboration between Harvey and Parish, following 1996's Dance Hall at Louse Point. The album was recorded in Bristol and Dorset, and mixed by Flood. This album is made up of ten new songs. All the music is written by Parish, who also plays most of the instruments. The vocals and all lyrics are by Harvey.

PJ Harvey's previous album with John Parish was 1998's Dance Hall at Louise Point, but the 12-year wait was worth it. Harvey's brutal doctrine - that nothing should sound like anything either of them has done before - has produced a thrilling, boundless work. The songs are riots of changing themes and multiple musical personalities.

Harvey's second co-billed album with John Parish shows many divergent sides of the singer, in a sense amounting to an audition reel full of character studies. Harvey has said that her collaborations with Parish give her the freedom to push into new places, and there is a sense of exploration here as she fits her words to the shapes of his songs. You can detect Harvey taking the chance to stretch, if not necessarily as a lyricist, then certainly as a singer. On the conventional opener "Black Hearted Love", she sounds like she's singing from a different sonic plane.

A Woman a Man Walked By is eclectic, experimental and has more moments that could be described as fun (at least to Harvey-Parish standards) than even Stories from the City. Like their first project, the album didn’t get the attention of a proper PJ Harvey record, but these songs are as vibrant as anything she’s touches. Five years since Let England Shake, PJ Harvey officially announced her ninth album in January. The Hope Six Demolition Project was created last year during public sessions as part of a London art exhibition where visitors were allowed to view Harvey and her collaborators recording the album through a one-way mirror. While writing the songs (as well as her poetry book The Hollow of the Hand), Harvey traveled to Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington . with photographer and filmmaker Seamus Murphy.
