I bought the original Who's Landing In My Hangar? album on vinyl back in 1981. Why they didn't just do this as a double-disc set I don't know, but what the heck, surprise downloads are cool, and it was easy enough to burn them on a CD which fits nicely inside the case on top of the main disc. Who's Landing In My Hangar? is one of the essential new wave albums of the 1980s. On the nine 1983 Polydor demos, Human Switchboard dials back the intensity and the guitar quite a bit, probably because the label wanted to hear something more commercial radio-friendly.

Who knew the Human Switchboard had made an attempt at alt-country? The anthology does, and puts it perhaps rightfully, at the end. Bob Pfeifer’s voice is too wild and unhinged, think Chris Stamey after a couple Red Bulls, to convincingly pull off Always Lonely For You. Half the fun of Who’s Landing in My Hangar? is in the dangling narrative loose ends. What other album would have a line like I think I’ll go back to dry humping cigarette machines ? For that line alone, In My Room would be a standout track, but it’s got a bell groove too. Pfeifer dangles precariously from the top of the bell groove.

While this 21-track collection doesn't include every single Switchboard cut, it nevertheless adroitly addresses a grievous gap in the recorded history of American post-punk, as the Human Switchboard discography was entirely out of print until this disc's 2011 release.

Such was the case with Human Switchboard, three New ns (singer/guitarist Bob Pfeifer, keyboardist/singer Myrna Marcarian, drummer Ron Metz, plus a revolving door of bassists) who mixed (among other influences) Buckeye State heroes Pere Ubu and the Pretenders, the Talking Heads and the Velvet Underground with a unique pop and lyrical sensibility

HUMAN SWITCHBOARD: Who's Landing in My Hangar? (Faulty Products) Have rock-and-rollers ever reflected more matter-of-factly on the travails of sexual commitment? Bet both Pfeifer and Marcarian were raised up in the First Church of Humanity (Secular), because unlike Elvis II and the X kids, for instance, they don't find much thrill in confessional-just get annoyed, pissed off, very pissed off, and insane with rage. THE KINKS: Give the People What They Want (Arista) Hook-laden and hard-rocking, this is the best-crafted Kinks album in over a decade, which means that for someone who's found Ray Davies's world-view increasingly mean-spirited and mush-brained, it's also the biggest turnoff.

Who's Landing in My Hangar? was the only studio album by Human Switchboard. All songs written by Bob Pfeifer, except where noted. (Say No To) Saturday's Girl" – 3:50 (Bob Pfeifer, Myrna Marcarian).
