Baptists wear their influences on their collective sleeves, but the sleeves belong to a shirt that fits. One can't help but pinpoint the Converge and Botch worship throughout Bushcraft, but it's done really fucking aggressively with more d-beats and dissonant riffing than you could swing an axe at. Opener "Betterment" sets a tone of discomfort with feedback amidst sludge-laden diminished riffing

Baptists' Bushcraft has been in the works for quite some time, but the Vancouver doomsayers are finally ready to let loose their positively devastating full-length debut. The LP hits stores today (February 19) via Southern Lord, and you can hear the 11-song crusher in full now via Exclaim. As previously reported, the song cycle was tracked with Converge guitarist/producer Kurt Ballou at his GodCity Studio in Salem, MA.

Bushcraft, the band’s first album for reliable crust purveyors Southern Lord, runs only 10 seconds over the 30 minute mark, but those 30 minutes are choked to the gills with d-beat blasts, raw surges of power chords, and a vocalist - Andrew Drury - whose throaty growls could strip paint off the walls. Baptists display more than a few aesthetic similarities to Converge, which makes perfect sense given Ballou’s involvement on the album. And as far as hardcore heroes go, you can scarcely do better than Converge. There’s still lots of room for growth for Baptists to ascend to that level, but they’re on the right track.

Providing much of the ferocity that can be heard on this album is drummer Nick Yacyshyn, who previously played in an incredibly technical mathcore band called A Textbook Tragedy. His relentless energy gives Bushcraft an immensely strong backbone, upon which the rest of the album’s sonic landscape can be built. Over these punishing drums is a selection of incredibly sludgy guitar riffs, punctuated by the occasional screaming lead riff.
