Anyway, Vallenfyre left three fantastic records behind and their second LP "Splinters" is the one I like the most. This album is simply amazing and close to perfection, it definitely is my favourite work from Gregor Mackintosh, whether we speak of Vallenfyre or any Paradise Lost album he ever composed. But while the album as a whole is very enjoyable, one thing that Vallenfyre loses points for is their lack of originality. Everything about this record has been done before, and anybody going into it will not find any surprises or new ideas to blow them away with.

Vallenfyre on Splinters pretty much embody that. They forcefully absorb you into the mass of corrupted defilement they have created, and use your very life force to feed their ability to function. This characteristic is what seals the doomier aspects of the album, especially with a guitar tone that seems purposefully dialed in so that it does not sustain well over time. When notes are rung out, you can hear the guitars wilting out of focus and the tone dying out.
