An album showcasing two lengthy pieces of work from performances of musical theatre traditions in Java. The first is the langen mandra wanara, a form of light music based on the song of the monkeys from the Ramayana epic. This is performed by the musicians of Radio Yogyakarta to great virtuosity.

The sound is beautiful and the instruments sound distinct. This is an especially nice CD for introducing newcomers to Javanese gamelan because of the straightforward style. Long sections of rebab and/or female vocalists are an insurmountable barrier to many people. I know I will listen to this CD countless times. This is an excellent example of loud style gamelan music, played by the members of Yogyakarta Royal Palace orchestra. There are four tracks, 2 Ladrangs, a gendhing and a long dance suite. Both pelog and slendro scales are represented.
