As Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed his Orchestral Symphonies with twelve obbligato parts in 1775/1776, Europe was caught up in Werther fever, a movement focussed on expressing one’s emotions theatrically whilst the first signs of turmoil in politics and economics were simultaneously raising their heads  . The four symphonies are veritable fireworks of emotions: full of suspense, poignancy and exuberant joy.

The Kammerorchester "Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach" under Hartmut Haenchen gets the rough, abrupt quality in this music, which over the course of two CDs is absolutely never boring. Any of these works could appear on a standard orchestra program and set the crowd on its ear. Like the rest of Phoenix's series, this is worth seeking out for fans of the Classical period. Track Listing - Disc 1. Title/Composer. Orchester-sinfonien (4), collection of symphonies for orchestra, H. 663-666, Wq. 183/1-4

The six symphonies for strings, Wq182 of 1773 were written in response to a commission from the ambassador and patron of the arts Baron van Swieten, and they already reveal a profoundly original voice. The four symphonies, Wq183, composed in 1775–76, go even further. The organ music of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is to be viewed against this music, historical and stylistic background. Bach: The Mozart family’s first grand tour brought them to London in 1765. Wolfgang Amadeus was aged nine at the time, and his talented sister Maria Anna was 15.

Symphonies by CPE Bach, Beethoven and Haydn. 23 October 2017 - 4:18pm. Submitted by Music Freelance. Album title: CPE Bach Beethoven Haydn. Composer(s): Beethoven, CPE Bach, Haydn. Yet hearing the opening of Haydn’s Symphony No. 39 immediately after the third of CPE Bach’s mid 1770s Hamburg symphonies ‘with 12 Obbligato Parts’ is to be reminded how much the musical worlds of CPE and Haydn’s Sturm und Drang collide – the Haydn fragmented, living on its nerve endings. Yet the Beethoven comes off the least convincingly.
