Talk about Kenny Dope - Favorite Grooves

Just_paw
The title of the release is “Favorite Grooves”, not “Favourite Grooves” as listed on Amazon UK. This mix came out on tape back in 1999 if I remember correctly and was reissued in 2004 by Kenny’s label Dopewax on CD. To be honest, I am a bit suspicious whether copies which are offered today (2016) for sale as “new” are originals, but having bought a new copy just recently, I have to admit the quality is good even if you’ve slept on this for over a decade. It’s one of four titles mixed by Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez released originally around the turn of the millennium (the others being “Roller Disco 80’s”, “Break Beats” and “Soul Trippin’”) and reissued in 2004. Many tracks might be familiar Favorite Grooves for the soulboy fraternity and London’s rare groove scene though there is a good amount of jazz and non-dancefloor soul. After the many years since the original release of the mix I think it’s easy to forget what kind of digger and hardcore collector you had to be back in the days to know let alone to have all these titles. Certainly many had not been reissued back then and remained elusive on CD.The selection is very good and the mix easy on the ear: There is no turntable wizardry and no digital effects. Many titles are being given room to breath (look at the timings) and the transitions from one to the other show Kenny’s DJ and production skills, whether he blends or cuts from one to the next. Like many DJs he has an audio watermark (“Kenny DoDoDoDoDope….”) but he is using is sparely and it does not distract from the selection. Good for weekend breakfasts, small café/bar background music or to reminisce, but not necessarily an essential purchase.
