Thomas Merton (Artist), Trappist Monks of Gethsemani (Performer) Format: Vinyl. This is a discontinued LP that was never transferred to CD. What sets it apart is that quietly, in the course of the singing of the monks, the voice of Thomas Merton translates the Latin into English and it works very well. If you have a deep interest in the life and writing of Merton as I do, then this LP gives the atmosphere of Gethsemaini's monastic music. There are better recordings of Gregorian chant and on CD but Mertom's notes and vocal translation set the recording apart.
The current popularity of Gregorian chants as evidenced by Angel's "Chant" album reminded me of another, older recording, "Laudate Dominum," by the Trappist monks of the Abbey of Gethsemane, in Kentucky. It is unique in that the phrases of the psalms being sung are quietly narrated in English by Thomas Merton. The philosophical writings of Merton are also enjoying a renewed interest by a generation born after his death. A beautiful combination. E. J. BRANDAU New York.
