Ocean Colour Scene were formed after two other bands called The Boys and Fanatics disbanded. Fanatics released an EP titled Suburban Love Songs Their first single, "Sway", was released in September 1990 indie era. However, when their record label was swallowed up by larger company Phonogram their eponymous début album was remixed, against the band's wishes, to fit in with the Madchester musical trend of the time. The album was largely deemed a failure. Being in dispute with their label, the band were forced back onto the dole,. Post-Britpop (2001–2008). After splitting with bassist Damon Minchella, the band continued to record and perform.

Ocean Colour Scene was never a big concern in the . although they were among the leading lights of British trad rock in the '90s - the post-Oasis return to the real, memorably dubbed "Noel-rock" by the British press. So it's a little strange that their first hits collection, Songs for the Front Row, was initially released in the .

Ocean Colour Scene is an alternative rock band which formed in Birmingham, England in 1990. Currently, the band consists of Simon Fowler (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Steve Cradock (guitar, organ), Andy Bennett (guitar), Tony Boylan (guitar), Dan Sealey (bass) and Oscar Harrison (drums). I heard this playing in my local record store and had to ask who it was! My first thoughts were which band/album from the seventies had I missed? This contains all the excitement of a seventies band with good songs, some riffs, use of wah wah pedal, crisp drumming and interesting vocals. I bought the cd immediately and it has been a favourite since.
