Washing Machine ‎(Cass, Album, RE). Geffen Records. I believe that "Washing Machine" is one of the weakeast releases by Sonic Youth. Maybe the problem is the fact that there are almost no fast numbers, almost all of them are mid-tempo rock tracks. Whatever the reason, I can't shake off the feeling that they sound bored, with the exception of "Junkie's Promise" (secret ode to Kurt Cobain, apparently) and epic "Diamond Sea" which is closing the album. Other tracks seems to just fill the space. Very disappointing record, in my opinion.

That album, of course, is Sonic Youth's Washing Machine. After several days of exploring a sibling's room for new and uncharted musical territory, as my ears were virgins to sonic love at that time, I came upon this vaguely familiar album cover. Two fans standing there with bold, blue, and signed shirts. Washing Machine, despite Sonic Youth's past tendencies to lean towards much more dissonant and noise-laden song structures, is one of their most obviously melodic and well thought-out collection of songs to date. Distorded and raw guitar playing is turned in for clean, chorused melodic passages and harmonic chiming that, when the two (sometimes three) guitarists play at once, fuses together to form an ethereal wave of sounds.

This Sonic Youth album is one of the best. It has a perfect balance of Sonic Youth's hard garage punk sound, and their more etheral ambient experimentation. It you kow you like Sonic Youth already, you will most likely dig this album. If you have never heard Sonic Youth, this album is a good overall picture of their entire discography. 3 people found this helpful. At least One Thousand Leaves had the song Sunday which is awsome, but Washing Machine lacks any stand out songs. Sonic Youth's CD Dirty is creative even while sober.
