In between was Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, which resisted the relative concision of 1990’s Goo and 1992’s Dirty but still bore the whiff of commercial expectations. Released a month after Kurt Cobain’s suicide and in the middle of a messy alternative-rock culture explosion that Sonic Youth helped usher in but never particularly wanted for themselves, the album was shaggy by design-a concerted effort to loosen up after the rigor of previous studio efforts. Sonic Youth’s lyrics are generally afterthoughts compared to their acrobatic dissonance, but one album after Youth Against Fascism, Moore’s Androgynous Mind and Self-Obsessed and Sexxee nailed the current social and political moment with 25 years of foresight.

Relative to Sonic Youth's greater body of work, the album does seem rather sedate, though. The noises resonate subtly rather than mangle one's eardrum. In sum, this record must be considered the closest the group has ever gone to straight-ahead pop/rock. With all of the feedback, murky production, incoherent song structuring, and rambunctious charisma stripped away, what remains are odd lyrics and unique guitar nuance.

Sonic Youth set up a two-week tour of Europe for the summer of 1983. Sclavunos, however, quit after only a few months. The group asked Bert to rejoin, and he agreed, on the condition that he would not be fired again after the tour's conclusion. In 1994, the band released Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, their best-charting release in the United States (until 2009's The Eternal), which peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard 200. The album was filled with low-key melodies and even produced a hit single, "Bull in the Heather". Moore and Gordon's daughter, Coco Hayley Moore, was born later in the year, and many of the songs from the album were never played live because there was never a full tour to support the album due to Gordon's pregnancy.

Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star out-noises the majority of its peers. Butch Vig's clean production makes the album seem clean, when in actuality it is nearly as dirty as the group's preceding effort. Songs such as 'Starfield Road' and the acoustic song 'Winner's Blues' emanate plenty of raw spontaneity, even with Vig's crystal clear production. Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star features the underlying foundation of the group's music standing naked, without any of their traditionally excessive static to heighten it. Go Unlimited  . If you've never listened to Sonic Youth, I would recommend this be your first or second album (second only to Daydream Nation, because that album is choice for anybody who is passionate about music in any capacity. You see, honestly, it's far and away from being SY's best album, but it's perfect for those who don't yet 'get' SY's sound.

Experimental Jet Set was also the first Sonic Youth album to feature a hidden track on the CD release; just over a minute after the closing track "Sweet Shine" finishes, there is 1:30 of "bonus noise" featuring a looped speech of a Japanese gas attendant.
