Focus is the debut album by Cynic, released September 14, 1993 through Roadrunner Records. A remastered version of the album was released in 2004. After years of being hailed as a promising act in Florida's death metal scene, Cynic recorded Focus. The result was an album combining their love of death metal with other influences, notably jazz. Instead of choosing the brutal and hard-hitting approach to metal like most of their contemporaries, Focus takes an experimental stance to music.

CYNIC was planning to record their first full-length album on the RoadRunner label after doing the Death record, then tour with Death and come home briefly before going on tour again for their own record. For unknown reasons, this didn't happen and they went straight into the Death European tour for the rest of 1991. CYNIC was now scheduled to go into the studio in October of 1992 with Scott Burns to record their debut album. He has the sort of voice and singing style which would fit perfectly on an alternative rock album.

It might be fairer to see it as a more balanced reaction to the album after the frostier reception it had on release. London Calling was neither a sell-out nor a conscious attempt to crack America.
