Focus is the debut album by Cynic, released September 14, 1993 through Roadrunner Records. A remastered version of the album was released in 2004. After years of being hailed as a promising act in Florida's death metal scene, Cynic recorded Focus. The result was an album combining their love of death metal with other influences, notably jazz. Instead of choosing the brutal and hard-hitting approach to metal like most of their contemporaries, Focus takes an experimental stance to music.

This is the most vital progressive Death Metal album as far as I'm concerned. A truly eclectic blend containing elements of Bossa Nova, Jazz Fusion, Straight up Prog and obviously Death Metal.

Cynic were: Paul Masvidal - guitar, electronically altered vocals (I think) Jason Gobel - guitar Sean Malone - bass Sean Reinert - drums (some electronic) Keyboards were done by Reinert, and occasionally Teegarden when Reinert was too busy with the drums. That is the central line-up. Tony Teegarden did the death vocals on the album. Sonia Otey I think did the female vocals

Overall Focus is an album for the ages. An album that should forever be remembered for everything it accomplished. Modern bands still haven't caught up to this level of songwriting. Cynic apparently started out as a Thrash Metal band, but by the time they released this, their storied 1993 debut album, they had morphed into an entirely new beast. I can't really call this anything other than Prog, because it really does progress, and in an entirely new direction from the then-infantile Dream Theater and their blend of Heavy Metal with Rush/Fates Warning-esque Prog Rock.

Okay, Atheist were close with their last two albums, and Pestilence somehow starved on half way with "Spheres". But, dear readers, THIS is the real thing. Anyone not completely out of their minds just HAS to give this album 5 points. I definitely do, and would gladly give more if I could. Reply Notify me 2 Helpful.

Talk about Cynic - Focus

Went Tyu
If you are fan of cynic and death metal in general this release is one of the greatest represses out there... listened so many represses on high end system and this sound like a charm ! Its properly mastered(for vinyl), you can hear every instrument and it doesnt sound generic or bad(sound from basement i call that :) ) so fell free to grab this one ! Absolutely brilliant !
Hallolan
According to Cinram, Olyphant, PA pressing numbers, the glass was mastered in 2007 for this release
Pryl
Does anyone know if this release uses original 1993 mastering or the awful 2004/2013 remastering? Or maybe a brand new mastering? Would love to buy this, but not if it uses that terrible remaster
DEAD-SHOT
I'm pretty sure it's the 1993 digital master, which is basically a cd master pressed on vinyl. Still pretty damn good.
Oppebro
Can anybody tell how this reissue sounds? Especially the orange vs. the black reissue? Thanks!
Roram
I dont have orange i have black one, i write post up... sound brilliant . Ive gotOriginal rr first press cd (signed by band - brag :) ) and this sound much better!
Thetalas
Sounds perfect. Just as good as the original vinyl pressing.
Chinon
Where does this reissue come from, I can’t find it anywhere, it just suddenly appeared. Anyone know anything? Thanks.
Zainian
It is sold on Season Of Mist's webshop, just ordered a copy :)
Iphonedivorced
There was, they just weren’t released commercially, the label/band had them. This was confirmed by P. Masvidal.
Danial
There was no orange re-issue in 2013 .
Vut
The orange and black *2018 reissues* are actually just leftovers from the 2013 roadrunner/cynic reissue. Deadstock essentially.
Yozshugore
Same, its just appeared. its available to order through Seasons of Mist and High Roller Records at present. I cant find it anywhere else.
Nalmetus
I tried to understand this album, many times in the past. Said nothing to me...I prefer Gorguts, Atheist or Morbid Angel..
Whiteflame
This pressing sounded awful, sold it right after buying it in 2013. Since this was supposedly mastered from the original tapes, the tapes are either almost completely damaged or the vinyl cut was done by an amateur. I had two copies, both sounded the same - very distorted, even the mp3 is 100x times better. I have a decent soundsystem (turntable).
Prince Persie
...and whole vinyl played on similar gear like mine, no distortion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbf3DI7wtYg
Yadon
Strange, I bought my copy on Cynic site and it sounds great. Played on Technics1210 and at440 mla cartridge. Maybe check youe Cartridge setup or needle is worn, dirty?
Yojin
100 copies were signed by both Paul and Sean. I bought mine off the band at a concert in Toronto. It is a test pressing, too
Steelcaster
Greetings. I was curious if you could help me. I also obtained a numbered test press while Cynic was touring. Any idea how I can tell the difference between the 2003 test press and the regular 2003 repress?Thank you
Nagis
one of the best jazz fusion records of the last few decades. highly recommend to any fans of death metal, progressive rock, jazz, and other groups with intricate, interlocking guitar melodies (television, king diamond, 80s king crimson, fugazi, fucked up,)
Moonworm
In Florida, at the beginning of the 90’s, in the middle of death metal explosion, a teenage band tried to deconstruct death metal and to reform it in a liquid and changing entity. Chuck Schuldiner was fascinated by these guys, and he decided to involve two of them in the construction of Human, a masterpiece of progressive death metal. Then, in 1993, Cynic published their debut album, an incredible step forward for the entire metal scene, obviously misunderstood at that time. Focus is a progressive rock album, in its most genuine exence. Beyond every convention, Focus explores spiritual dimensions with originality, both in lyrical and in musical aspects. Songs structure is cerebral and twisted, melodies are fluid and emotional, and solos are amazing, with their jazz fusion taste. King Crimson’s fractal music was here reborn in a metal form.
Kesalard
The 1 star rating is for the master. This album is brilliant, as everyone knows. It flows like a true cheese-prog masterwork, the drumming is beatiful, musicianship is masterful all round. Not very Death Metal for a supposed Death Metal band (they did some more Deathy demos) as they changed from all throating to cheesy vocoder robot voices but it works to creat something unique. But this verison (the roadrunenr remaster with bonus tracks) is a TOTAL PIECE OF SHIT!! Don;t buy it!! They pushed everything up so high that the guitars just sound really harsh and nasty, the drums sound too dense or compressed or something and the bass is pretty much lost, you can feel it but can't hear the notes. The original master sounded beautiful, really nice and open. This one is a disgrace, as are most remasters. Just leave these albums sounding how they did when the bands and producers were in the studio!!
superstar
What can you say about perfection? Tough call. This is, THE, and I would like to stress THE !! progressive Death Metal album. The technical prefection, the mastering of the instruments is only one aspect, what makes this album so brilliant is its "multilayerety", the fact that there is absolutely nothing boring about it even after 16 years! I could hear it every week, and i honestly did so at least 2 years after release, without fatigu. No other album in the genre has ever matched this, or even came within sight. Okay, Atheist were close with their last two albums, and Pestilence somehow starved on half way with "Spheres". But, dear readers, THIS is the real thing. Anyone not completely out of their minds just HAS to give this album 5 points. I definitely do, and would gladly give more if I could.
