Bert Kaempfert (born Berthold Heinrich Kämpfert, 16 October 1923 – 21 June 1980) was a German orchestra leader, t, music producer, arranger, and composer. He made easy listening and jazz-oriented records and wrote the music for a number of well-known songs, including "Strangers in the Night" and "Moon Over Naples". Kaempfert was born in Hamburg, Germany, where he received his lifelong nickname, Fips, and studied at the local school of music

Bert Kaempfert tried to get the piccolos to imitate the sound of penny whistles. We had real hard rehearsals. But at last we had made it and Bert was really pleased to have captured the charm of the whistles in ‘his’ piccolos, reminisced bass guitarist Ladi Geisler. The intro to Afrikaan Beat is also one of the most unmistakable symbols of Bert Kaempfert and his Orchestra today, with its typical ‘cracking bass’. Again Ladi Geisler recalls: We musicians were, as always, gathered around one microphone. My amplifier was about 3 meters away, the same distance as the trombones. In the course of the years, Bert Kaempfert received a number of awards and gold LPs as a reward for the huge success of this album all over the world. But he was particularly delighted to receive a gold LP from South Africa.

This is a reissue of Bert Kaempfert's classic 1962 recording, which helped make him an international star. Included are some of his best-loved hits such as "A Swingin' Safari," "Afrikaan Beat," and "The Happy Trumpeter. The use of flutes, penny whistles, and voices contribute to the cheerful, lighthearted mood and became a staple of the "Kaempfert sound. Trumpeter Fred Moch plays an unheralded, yet vital role throughout and remained an unsung star in the Kaempfert orchestra for many years

The Bert Kaempfert sound is so full and luscious. Each tune sounds like the original rendition enhanced with that infectious Kaempfert beat. I never thought it would be possible to improve upon the classics but the Kaempfert sound takes it to the next (and ultimate) level. The first twelve cuts of Side One are the original "Swing" album that Polydor released in '78. The other three cuts on Disc One, and all of Disc Two, are either covers or Kaempfert originals culled from the bandleader's regular Polydor/Decca/MCA output between 1966 and 1975.
