From the disbanded Keith Jarrett American quartet came bassist Charlie Haden and tenor Dewey Redman - who alternates with and occasionally plays alongside tenor Michael Brecker - and Jack DeJohnette provides more combustible drumming than Metheny had ever experienced on record before. Yet Metheny's off-kilter wandering on solo electric guitar is a comfortable fit for the post-bop rhythmic crosscurrents of this music.

This is the single-disc version of the original double-album, omitting a couple of the more free-form improvised pieces in favor of the more tuneful stuff (six tracks instead of eight). In a way, it focuses the album a bit, and one could argue that the record is less flabby because of it. There's also the collectability factor, since this seems to be a European version.

Featuring Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, and Joshua Redman. Long considered one of the essential Metheny recordings – not to mention an important part of any music collection – 80/81 continues to hold its stance as a pivotal recording for composition, artistry, and improvisation. I just loved all four of them.
