CD1, Charlie Haden's 50th Birthday Concert, was recorded in True Stereo at At My Place, Santa Monica, California, USA by Ken Christianson, Pro Musica, Chicago on August 6 1987. CD2, Charlie Haden with Quartet West, was recorded live at Webster University, St Louis, USA by Ken Christianson, Pro Musica, Chicago on April 4 1988. Originally released as two individual Naim titles in 1994, Charlie Haden's Private Collection Vol 1 & 2 were limited to 2,200 copies each and sold through Naim's UK Hi-Fi retailers. The chemistry of these two quartets, played at separate venues almost a year apart, is quite a musical treat. Hearing Billy Higgins' lay down his signature driving pulses on disc one is pure joy for the ears.

The Private Collection is a live album by the American jazz bassist Charlie Haden's Quartet West recorded at performances in 1988 and 1989 and released on the Naim label. This well-recorded two-fer features Haden's Quartet West at its best".

Charles Edward "Charlie" Haden (August 6, 1937 – July 11, 2014) was an American jazz double bass player, bandleader, composer and educator known for his long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman, pianist Keith Jarrett, his Liberation Music Orchestra, with arrangements by pianist Carla Bley, and his band formed in the 1980s, Quartet West. At age 14, Haden had become interested in jazz after hearing Charlie Parker and Stan Kenton in concert. Once he recovered from his bout with polio, Haden began in earnest to concentrate on playing the bass. Haden's interest in the instrument was not sparked by jazz bass alone, but also by the harmonies and chords he heard in compositions by Bach. Family & Friends: Rambling Boy released: 2008. The Private Collection released: 2007. Heartplay released: 2006. Not in Our Name released: 2005.

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden reunite for a terrific set that matches the pleasures of their acclaimed Jasmine album, writes John Fordham. This hushed duo set sounds like the epilogue to Jasmine, the collection of reflections on Broadway classics and ballads that Jarrett and double-bassist Haden made four years ago. Casually overheard, these exchanges can sound like superior lounge-jazz in their soft bass-walks, demurely stroked chords and piano improvisations; lean a little closer, however, and Jarrett's timing and sense of space, plus Haden's spontaneous countermelodies, continue to provide low-lit delights
