This album is so good it actually rivals some prog albums from the 1970s! Heatwave is an album from the 1980s, recorded by a avant-prog band who started in the 1970s. But it does the unthinkable: the music is just as good as anything from the '70s, but does not sound like dated '80s music. Keyboardist Andy Kirk returns for this album, and brings some of his songs with him.

Heatwave is the fifth album by Belgian RIO band Univers Zero. Released in 1986, the album is a continued exploration of the Middle Eastern influences, which first appeared on Uzed. The instrumentation here is more electronic than in their previous works. The album was recorded and mixed by Didier de Roos at Daylight Studio, Brussels. The album is unusual among Univers Zero albums in that drummer/bandleader Daniel Denis did not write the majority of the material

Univers Zero (also known as Univers Zéro and Univers-Zero) are an instrumental progressive Belgian band formed in 1974 by drummer Daniel Denis. The band is known for playing dark music heavily influenced by 20th-century chamber music. In 1973, Claude Deron and Daniel Denis, both former members of Belgian "Zeuhl" band Arkham (which had disbanded the previous year), set up a new group, Necronomicon.

Univers zero personnel 2004 Univers Zero 2004. The music takes on a more personal expression, largely due to the new compositions contributed by TRIGAUX and DENIS. After a number of line-up changes, the overall sound is augmented by a harmonium and a harpsichord (played by Emmanuel NICAISE) and a second violin (Marcel DUFRANE). UZ has now found the right balance in its combination of acoustic and electric instruments. In 1979 UZ record their second album, „HERESIE. It contains compositions of considerable length, which strive to convey extreme emotions of an increasingly sombre mood. Following tours of Sweden, Italy and France, (and the departure of Roger Trigaux, who starts his own group, PRESENT), the group is joined by Andy KIRK on keyboards.

On Heatwave, the transition from acoustic chamber music to electric rock is complete, and the somewhat uncertain steps of Uzed, Univers Zero's previous release, have become purposeful and confident. Almost all the Uzed musicians have returned for this date, together with Andy Kirk on keyboards and original Univers Zero violist/violinist Patrick Hanappier. Perhaps the only criticism that could be levied against the first three tracks on the CD is that they fall a little too comfortably into the prog rock genre, although they compare favorably to the best (and darkest) of King Crimson.
