The Westminster Cathedral Choir under James O'Donnell gives a glorious and fervently energetic but profound performance, and the music does in my mind benefit from using boys' rather than women's voices. This is, in short, as moving and inspiring as musical experiences get - the fine Passacaille is a nice coupling as well.

Pizzetti's Messa di Requiem, also composed in 1922, is a work firmly steeped in the Gregorian tradition, Pizzetti weaving an intriguing twentieth-century web over the familiar tunes. Also included on this recording are Martin's Passacaille, the composer's only work for solo organ, and Pizzetti's De profundis, dedicated by way of apology to a colleague on whom Pizzetti had previously vented his infamous foul temper.

The Requiem of Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) wears its historical antecedents more overtly on its sleeve, with aspects of plainchant, Renaissance polyphony and Venetian multiple choruses being called into service in a quite extraordinarily diverse setting of the Requiem. Stark melodies and two-part textures suddenly blossom into glowingly radiant complex harmonies.
