William Byrd, English madrigalist and composer, was born in 1543 in Lincolnshire in England, and died in 1623 in Essex of unknown causes. This 'Father of Musicke' is considered the greatest of the Virginal composers, and has arguably had more influence on the development of English music than any other composer. The Mass for Four Voices is a choral Mass setting by the English composer William Byrd (. 540–1623). It was written around 1592-3 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and is one of three settings of the Mass Ordinary which he published in London in the early 1590s. It consists of the text of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei) set for a four-part choir. The works is a noted example of English Renaissance music from the Tudor period.

Tallis: Mass for Four Voices; Motets /Oxford Camerata · Summerly by Thomas Tallis Audio CD £. 7. Only 4 left in stock (more on the way). Composed for six voices and included in his second Cantiones Sacrae it is for some reason rarely performed or recorded and I can guarantee that the music and this performance will captivate any listener whether they be specialists in the period or not. The recording is not authentic in that the mass sections follow one another without any liturgical chants, organ music or bells. A terrific recording of William Byrd's work. The smooth sound of boy choristers in the manner for which Byrd wrote is a marvellous thing to behold. Inspiring music beautifully sung.

His two brothers were choristers at St. Paul's Cathedral, and Byrd may have been a chorister there as well under Simon Westcote, although it is possible that he was a chorister with the Chapel Royal. A reference in the prefatory material to the Cantiones sacrae published by Byrd and Thomas Tallis in 1575 tends to confirm that Byrd was a pupil of Tallis in the Chapel Royal. According to Anthony Wood, Byrd was "bred up to musick under Tho. Tallis. Mass for Four Voices, or the Four-Part Mass, which according to Joseph Kerman was probably the first to be composed, is partly modelled on John Taverner's Mean Mass, a highly regarded early Tudor setting which Byrd would probably have sung as a choirboy.
