Serenade in C major, Op. 10, for string trio (usually violin, viola, cello) (1902), is an early 20th-century five-movement suite by Hungarian composer Ernő Dohnányi. Premiered in Vienna in 1904, year of its first publication, it was written in 1902 during a concert tour to London and Vienna. The serenade comprises five movements: I. Marcia: Allegro II. Romanza: Adagio non troppo III. Scherzo: Vivace IV. Tema con variazioni: Andante con moto V. Rondo (Finale): Allegro vivace.

There were many-from such fine composers as Herzogenberg, Reinecke, Fuchs, and Berens to name but a few. Dohnanyi, unlike those writers and many of today's musicians, was almost certainly familiar with them. Beethoven begins his O. Serenade quite ceremoniously, as was the custom, with a relatively short march. Beethoven’s movement marking is Marcia. Ernst von Dohnanyi (1877-1960) (Ernö Dohnányi in Hungarian) is generally regarded, after Liszt, as Hungary’s most versatile musician. He was active as a concert pianist, composer, conductor and teacher and must be considered one of the chief influences on Hungary’s musical life in the 20th century. Certainly, his chamber music is very fine, with most of it being in the masterwork category.

The Serenade in C for violin, viola, and cello, which took shape during the first year of the twentieth century, is widely considered to be Dohnányi's finest early chamber work. It seems unusual that it was with an essay in this underrepresented genre that Dohnányi first made his mark as a composer of chamber music, since historically examples of truly "great" string trios are few and far between. In this work, Dohnányi devised a novel reinterpretation of Classical serenade form in a work of five movements. Unlike Beethoven's Serenade, Op. 8, Dohnányi does not end the work.

An International Ernst von Dohnányi Festival was held at Florida State University in 2002. LSU professor Milton Hallman was a student of his and recorded a CD called Works For Piano containing some of Dohnányi's most notable music in 1987. Dohnányi's compositional style was personal, but very conservative. Although he used elements of Hungarian folk music, he is not considered a nationalist composer like Béla Bartók or Zoltán Kodály.
