The Urban Voodoo Machine are probably one of the UK’s best nights out; a wildly colourful yet slightly sinister carnival of weirdness sound-tracked by some of the best drinking songs in a long time. Think The Pogues meeting Gogol Bordello in an after-hours knocking shop cum speakeasy and you’ll be close to their oeuvre. Hellbound Hymns is something of a sacrament to the last couple of years and the toll they’ve clearly taken on the band. It’s very much lower key and melancholic than previous release, I guess that’s hardly surprising given the circumstances, but it also has a real sense of geniality coursing through the songs.
