Robert Forster - The Evangelist flac album

The Evangelist is the fifth solo album by Australian singer-songwriter Robert Forster, released by YepRoc in 2008. Following the 1989 break-up of the Go-Betweens, the band he had formed at college in 1978 with his friend Grant McLennan, Robert Forster embarked on a solo career, releasing four albums under his own name between 1990 and 1996.

Robert Forster's first release since the death of Grant McLennan, his late partner in the Go-Betweens, is also his best solo album.

The Evangelist by singer and songwriter Robert Forster is his first solo recording in 11 years. It may not be a record he ever planned to make at all after the unexpected death of Grant McLennan, his collaborator for over 25 years in the Go Betweens. The band had released and was on tour for Oceans Apart, a masterpiece surpassed only by 16 Lovers Lane, if at all. Forster and McLennan had begun writing a new Go Betweens album in 2006, when McLennan passed away in his sleep from natural causes just shy of his 47th birthday.

Robert Derwent Garth Forster (born 29 June 1957) is an Australian singer-songwriter, guitarist and music critic. In December 1977 he co-founded an indie rock group, The Go-Betweens, with fellow musician, Grant McLennan. In 1980 Lindy Morrison joined the group on drums and backing vocals and by 1981 Forster and Morrison were also lovers. In 1988, "Streets of Your Town", co-written by McLennan and Forster, became the band's biggest chart hit in both Australia and the United Kingdom.

Robert Forster's first solo album in 12 years, his first after the untimely death of his fellow Go-Between Grant McLennan, begins with If It Rains, a song that shimmers with the same kind of exquisite sadness their much-loved band captured in their nine albums together. And when the soft guitars of Forster and McLennan's last joint composition, Demon Days, quickly follow it, the prospect of The Evangelist being a mournful masterpiece is all too gloriously likely

Forster and McLennan had begun writing a new Go Betweens album in 2006, when McLennan passed away in his sleep from natural causes just shy of his 47th birthday. Three of the songs on this album were co-written by the pair and contain McLennan's final lyrics. That said, The Evangelist is not an elegy or a conscious homage to McLennan. The remaining Go Betweens - bassist Adele Pickvance and drummer Glenn Thompson - make up the core band, with a small string section arranged by Audrey Riley (who did them for the Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express)

Robert Forster: The Evangelist. The surviving half of the Go-Betweens songwriting team is still in fine form, but it's impossible not to the phantom pain. Except that, of course, it's ridiculous to expect Forster's first album in 11 years to dwell on McLennan and McLennan only. In making this, and including his last work with his friend, he's clearly dealt with it and is ready to move on (with, as "From Ghost Town" reminds us, appropriate care taken and respect paid).
