César Franck’s symphony (composed in 1888) was still regularly performed when I was a child. Now his Violin Sonata is almost his only well-known composition. Though the symphony can be made to sound brash, in good hands - in Monteux’s, say, or Beecham’s - it is a fine work. Beecham loved it and conducted it throughout his long career; it was almost the last work he recorded, at the age of 81, in Paris in December 1959. The same sessions produced Lalo’s Symphony in G minor (composed shortly before the Franck), another favourite of Sir Thomas, who shows what a sturdy, worthwhile.
