Peter Franklyn Bellamy (8 September 1944 – 24 September 1991) was an English folk singer. He was a founding member of The Young Tradition but also had a long solo career, recording numerous albums and touring folk clubs and concert halls. He committed suicide in 1991. Peter Bellamy was born in Bournemouth and spent his formative years in North Norfolk, living in the village of Warham and attending Fakenham Grammar School in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His father worked as a farm bailiff
Widely considered the late Peter Bellamy's masterwork, the 1977 ballad opera The Transports tells the true story of Henry Cabell and Susannah Holmes, a pair of English convicts transported to Australia in the 18th century, set to period instruments. To some, this might sound both precious and dreadfully dull; however, Bellamy was not only a musicologist but also a gifted composer, and The Transports, which consists primarily of new lyrics set to existing melodies, is a boisterous set of tunes with sympathetic lyrics and a compelling forward flow to the rather simple narrative.

The suicide of Peter Bellamy in 1991 was one of the saddest, hardest things the British folk music community has ever had to face up to. Bellamy was prolific and prodigious, a talented songwriter, an interpreter with a fine ear, and an engaging and powerful live performer. But perhaps his greatest achievement was The Transports, an ambitious folk opera about the dehumanising effects of eighteenth-century England’s penal system, whose cast included various members of the Waterson-Carthy clan, Dave Swarbrick, Nic Jones, . Lloyd and June Tabor. The Transports isn’t merely a historical document. The anger of the convict in The Ballad Of Norwich Gaol (Bellowhead’s Benji Kirkpatrick) transcends the ages, and the song is a sharp critique not just of poorly-run, overcrowded prisons but also a warning about the dangers of privatisation and profit-driven social policies.
