If you’ve never heard Bright Phoebus -or never even heard of Lal and Mike Waterson, the British sister and brother who recorded the obscure masterpiece with contemporary folk royalty in 1972-its opening will still feel immediately familiar. Elaine "Lal" Waterson (15 February 1943 – 4 September 1998) was an English folksinger and songwriter. She sang with, among others, The Watersons, The Waterdaughters and Blue Murder. She was born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire. In 1998, she died suddenly in Robin Hood's Bay, of cancer diagnosed only ten days before. Lal Waterson's voice was stark but captivating, her songs lyrically ambitious and melodically powerful.

Finding some groundless, fleeting joy at the end of a very soggy rainbow, Mike Waterson concludes Bright Phoebus – the giddy 1972 ensemble piece he fronted with his younger sister, Lal – with a little rapture. from 2013, the original album remained largely off catalogue.
